An intense and unique Netflix show has been described as the "best series ever" by fans and critics alike, and it is available on the streaming platform right now. Beef is a comedy-drama television anthology series created by Lee Sung Jin for Netflix. It stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong alongside Joseph Lee, Young Mazino, David Choe, and Patti Yasutake. The ten-episode series was released on Netflix in early 2023.
The series was met with instant acclaim from critics, praising Yeun's and Wong's performances, as well as the writing and directing. At the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, the series won eight awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and acting wins for Yeun and Wong. At the 81st Golden Globe Awards, it won in all three of its nominated categories, including Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film. A second series has been confirmed, with filming completed; it is likely to be released in 2026.
A summary of the series' plot reads: "Beef centres on an escalating feud between two strangers, contractor Danny Cho and entrepreneur Amy Lau, after a road rage incident spirals into a destructive, life-ruining conflict. The 'beef' between them brings out their worst impulses and leads to a series of destructive acts that ensnare their families and sabotage their personal lives, all while they become increasingly obsessed with getting revenge on each other."
Beef has a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus stating: "Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are a diabolically watchable pair of adversaries in Beef, a prime cut comedy that finds the pathos in pettiness."
One critic wrote: "It is one of the best explorations of obsession I've ever seen, especially because it's such a strange and potent version of obsession between two strangers."
"Disarmingly funny and increasingly nasty, it should make everyone think twice before honking at that idiot stranger who just pulled out in front of you," added another.
Another reviewer said: "It manages to weave in unexpected love stories, fractured marriages and thwarted expectations, while never letting the philosophy get in the way of the point-scoring."
A viewer proclaimed: "One of my all-time favourite seasons of television!"
Another said the series was an "amazing piece of art", while a third said it was the "best series I have ever seen".
Beef is available to stream right now on Netflix.
